Announcements:
Does are payable now at an annual rate of 4150 payable semi-annually at $75. Phyllis is looking for someone to head up RYLA. We need speakers for July and the last week of June.

Speaker Highlights: Speaker was introduced by Suzann Madeley. The speaker, Professor James Pennebaker gave a very interesting talk about the relationship between our physical health and our mental health and how the mind can affect our bodies. He related some very interesting studies that looked at how personal stress or traumatic events in our lives affect our health and well being. He further opined how our language and words can help us relieve stress and thus improve our health. He took questions afterwards.

Speaker Highlights: Speaker was introduced by Grant Sparks. The speaker, Judge Lee Yeakel, gave an inspiring talk about Theodore Roosevelt, one of our greatest Presidents. He gave some interesting and information tidbits of his personal life and his ties to Texas and the west. To have lived only 60 years, Theodore Roosevelt accomplished quite a bit.

Speaker Highlights: Speaker was introduced by Grant Sparks. The speaker, Veronica Macon, is the Vice President of the Austin Housing Authority. She gave us some startling statistics on the number of units, residents and waiting times. APHA has 19 properties and partners with other organizations to provide a wide range of services to the community. Funded primarily by HUD, the authority works to break the cycle of poverty and build strong families. The Community Development Program receives approximately $500,000 per year in grants. Speaker Highlights: Speaker was introduced by Bill Davidson. The speaker, John Knaggs gave a great talk about Texas history between the Alamo and San Jacinto. He studied both the Texan and Mexican side of the story and documents related to both. His book, “The Bugles are Silent” documents his findings and was for sale at the end of the program.

Speaker Highlights: Speaker was introduced by Carleton. The speaker, Tom Fleming gave an interesting talk about Uzbekistan, where he was a Peace Corp volunteer for several years. He was a health teacher teaching fundamentalist Muslims about HIV and Aids. The presentation did a great job of highlighting the history and people of the country, which used to be part of the Soviet Union. He made himself available afterwards to answer questions and sign his book.

Speaker Highlights: Speaker was introduced by Carleton The speaker, Al Williams gave an insightful talk regarding Charles Joseph Whitman, the UT Tower shooter from August 1, 1966. 17 people were killed and 41 wounded during that mass killing. The shooter was killed by Houston McCoy but Romero Martinez got most of the credit. Mr. Williams has not been back to the Tower since the shooting. We watched approximately 15 minutes of DVD documentary on the shooting.

Speaker Highlights: Speaker was introduced by Camille. The speaker, Ron Cartlidge is a retired teacher in the Austin ISD and is a magician of note. He gave a great talk about Eric Weiss, otherwise known as Houdini. While many known of Houdini’s magical prowess, few know that he too was an aviator and actor. The UT Ransom Museum has quite a Houdini collection of artifacts. Mr. Cartlidge has written a book about Eric Weiss.

Lawrence announced the need for speakers in January 2008. A roster went around for members to update. The next 11th Street cleanup will be in February 2008. Carleton announced there’d be no Happy Hour after the Ronald McDonald House this week. Andrew and Carleton will take up the money for the theater tickets and members are encouraged to get their money in asap. The troopers chili meal will be sometime in January 2008. Phyllis will make arrangements for gift certificates for the cafeteria staff.

Speaker Highlights: Speaker was introduced by Suzann Madeley. The speaker, Anne Dee Thierry spoke at length about her experiences in Bali and the good work she and her organization do for the people in Bali. They help with vitamins and milk among other things. They helped bring water and school books as well. She will be returning to Bali in January 2008. She and her organization sell jewelry to help raise funds for the Bali project.

Speaker Highlights: Speaker were introduced by Suzann Madeley. The speaker, Russ Jones, gave a convincing talk on the futility of the War on Drugs, which he characterized as a war on the American People. Despite the trillion dollars of spending, the drug problem is worse than ever before and people’s lives are often destroyed by the conviction on their records. Mr. Jones supports a program of regulation which would render the drug cartels powerless and run them out of business.

Speaker Highlights: Speaker were introduced by Carole Bleakney. The speakers did a splendid job of presenting some Texas history and commentary. Mr. Read handled Jim Wright’s first campaign for Congress. He also worked in John Connally’s 1962 run for Governor. Mr. Read was in the motorcade when JFK was assassinated in Dallas on November 22, 1963 (where were you?) Both Mr. Read and his daughter did a wonderful job. It was suggested that he write a book about his experience with the assassination. After the presentation, the speakers took questions.

The Ronald McDonald House meal went well last week. The board meeting was yesterday. Carleton paid for his 6 tickets for the find raiser and asked everyone to pay soon so we’ll have the funds to pay the theatre etc. The fund raiser is scheduled for Fen 13th. Lawrence mentioned the many opportunities for giving to the Foundation. Phyllis asked that the status of her donations be checked for accuracy. Phyllis asked about donations to the Act of Love group for Ft. Hood.

Speaker Highlights: Richard introduced our speakers today. Our speaker today was The Yellow Tape Construction Company with Amanda Butterfield as the main spokesperson. She and the others in her group put on a skit and sang some songs to give us examples of the type work they do in their theatre group. The works were well done and the group enjoyed the presentations. The group can be found at www.yellowtape.org. After the presentations, the group took questions.

Phyllis stood in for our missing President today. She reminded everyone of the Ronald McDonald House tomorrow. The Cosmopolitan Rotary Club meets on Thursdays from 5 to 6 at Thai Passion which is located at 620 Congress Avenue and everyone is reminded of the opportunity for fellowship and a makeup. The Board meeting is next Tuesday and everyone is encouraged to attend. Lawrence provided everyone with the Rotary information requested at the Club Assembly last week.

Speaker Highlights: Our speaker today was Brian Francis, Deputy Executive Director of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. He gave us a brief talk about who and what we are as people and how we’re not defined by what we do but by what we are. He then recited some of his spoken word poetry which was very well received by the group. He recited three poems and took questions afterwards.

Carleton mentioned the e-mail he received about the new IRS requirements and Sally too noted that we should become a 501.3c organization, which was a well received idea by all. Bill Davidson agreed to contact Bill Bednar and coordinate trying to get this going. The matter of the $500 fee seemed agreeable to everyone.

The club discussed the monthly happy hour thing and coordinating same with the Cosmo Club. Karen will contact them and we’ll see what happens.

Our speaker was Dicky Griggs, an attorney who represented Gitmo detainees. He gave an interesting talk on the various aspects of the detainee issue and presented some heretofore unheard insight into those issues. The speaker regaled the group with the moral considerations related to the detainees and took questions at the end of his presentation.

Richard gave for Karen for the upcoming TTU and TAMU game in Lubbock. Suzann gave for the LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) folks and the armadillo she saw on the Capitol grounds this morning. Phyllis gave to honor Andrew’s new position as an Assistant State Attorney General-Congratulations Andrew. Grant then gave to announce his resignation from the State Attorney General’s Office to take a position with the U.S. Attorney General’s Office-Congratulations Grant. Ben gave for the Toyota hub cab found during the 11th Street Cleanup last Saturday. They hope to find the car at December’s cleanup. Camille gave for the cleanup as well. Andrew gave for forgetting his name badge. Fred gave for the speaker and the successful Ronald McDonald House meal last Thursday. Karen gave for the armadillo near the archives building and for Richard and the TTU/TAMU gave this Saturday. Carleton gave for his Dad who is still speaking to him after time on the ranch.

Lawrence thanked everyone for their work in getting speakers and asked that everyone look for speakers for November, which at present is wide open. Ben reported that 6 people showed up for the 11th Street Cleanup. Chris reported on the Ronald McDonald House meal.

Our speaker was Vanessa Davis, who was introduced by Fred White. Vanessa is a Program Manager at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. She gave an inspiring talk about justice, fairness and charity from a moral perspective. She related stories from her childhood in Midland and asked that we consider how we think of justice and react to its absence. She described the 3 types of relationships and that the I-Thou was the one in which personal justice was a key component. The talk was followed by some questions and a round of applause.

Lawrence gave regaling the membership with a story about a Texas Lady, rattlesnakes and gun play. Grant gave because he feels UT’s pain and for his Colorado trip. Speaker Highlights:
Our speaker was Linda McDonoghy, who was introduced by Fred White. Linda deals with false and fraudulent diplomas, which now include both higher education and high school. She regaled the group with much humor in telling the sad tale of those who obtain such fraudulent degrees. The Higher Education Coordinating Board regulates schools that want to issue diplomas in Texas. Her office maintains a list of fraudulent diploma issuing schools and organizations. The agency reveived a setback by a recent State Surpreme Court ruling that did not give the Board authority to regulate religious schools. You can find out how to obtain a fraudulent degree on line. Community Colleges, which have an open admissions policy, are victimized, as is the taxpayer, when fraudulent high school diplomas are issued to those who can pass the high school graduation tests.

Our speaker was Terrell Blodgett, who was introduced by Jerry Conn. Mr. Blodgett spoke at length about former Governor Pat Neff. Gov Neff also served many years as the President of Baylor University. He discussed his recently published book about the interesting former Governor. Sul Ross, Ann Richards and pat Neff all were from Waco, attended Baylor University and served as Governor of Texas. Gov Neff was the first Governor to fly in an airplane. He was an ardent temperance believer. He founded the State parks system and launched the gas tax and the highway system. He also pardoned the blues singer Lead Belly.

Our speaker was Ross Ramsey. He has spoken at the club 4 times so far. He started off with Mack Brown’s salary and compared it to the Legislators. Pretty funny I must say. He noted that traditionally Labor Day starts the serious re-election stuff. 2008 has only a few statewide elections. The Attorney General has been asked to answer several questions related to the Speaker of the House. Most state politicians are looking past 2008 and toward 2010. There are questions about Sen. Hutcheson and her seat. A lot of new laws take effect on 9-1-2007.

Our speaker was Casey Monahan from the Texas Music office. He was quite a colorful speaker who gave the group much insight into the music industry’s economic impact in Texas. The music office is the sister to the film commission. The industry employees 100,000 people in Texas. There are more than 8000 bands and 700 annual music festivals in the state. Musicians want respect and need assistance with the buysiness aspects of the industry.

Our speaker was Joe Newman, President of the Bastrop Economic Development Corp. He is a member of the Bastrop Club which has around 60 members. Bastrop is where Round Rock was 15 years ago. Lots of growth is coming to Bastrop. They have a 230 acre industrial park anchored my MD Anderson Cancer Research. They’re close to opening a new water source for the area and a new high school is planned for 2010.

Our speaker was Norman Johnson who has been in the entertainment business for many years. He has been a disk jockey, singer, song writer and host of talk radio. He titled his talk “Cruising on the Fringe of Fame.” He told many interesting stories about entertainers, politicians and people in general. He has known most of the country music starts of the last 50 years including Jim Reeves. He met Elvis when he was 14 years old and has a special photo Elvis gave to him. Thank You Carleton for this interesting and entertaining speaker.

Carleton recognized Phyllis for acting in his stead last week. Lawrence recognized his two new donkeys on the ranch. Grant recognized his son’s 7th birthday. David Uribe announced that he was leaving Austin and going to Seminary in Buffalo, NY and begin the process of entering the Priesthood. We’re all very proud of him and his ambitious plans!!!

Speaker Highlights:
Our speaker was Lou Soucy, a retired Secret Service agent who served on Lady Bird Johnson’s team for a number of years. Lou was originally from Maine, attended UT-Austin and was a former helicopter pilot in the uniformed service. He entertained us with some interesting stories about his service with Ms. Johnson and the other locations where he served as an agent. These locations included Paris, Belgium and Monte Carlo. He once met Princess Grace and worked undercover to catch counterfeiters in Europe. He worked in the Secret Service from the Johnson Administration through the Clinton Administration. Thank You Lou for giving us such a great talk!!! Thank you Grant Sparks for bringing to the club, this most appealing speaker.

Our new President Carleton gave David a heart thank you for a job well done and issued new Rotary Pins to the new officers. Carleton's first order of business was to change the date of the board meeting and to announce Phyllis would be acting in his stead at the next meeting on July 11th.

Speaker Highlights:
Our speaker was John Oberg, CEO of Alignment LLC, an executive coaching firm. He spoke to us about leadership and what is involved in being a good leader versus a leader. He pointed out some examples of people who were leaders (Hitler, Stalin) but not good leaders in the moral sense. Leadership itself is not always good or desirable as illustrated by the above examples. After an inspiring talk, he took a few questions and the meeting was adjourned.

Bill Bednar’s 18 year old daughter returned from her first year of college and of course he acknowledged general principle. Richard Fatheree wanted to know if he really had a dollar to give. Carleton Turner reminded everyone of the July 4 commitment to RYLA at the Bastrop Camp. Karen Rima has surplus Lance Armstrong bracelets for anyone who would like some. Fred White announced that Carleton Turner Team A is on board for the Ronald McDonald dinner. Lonnie Perkins is glad to be living in Austin after the seeing the free concert last Saturday with Joe Ely, Kris Kristofferson and others. Jerry Conn wanted to know after all these years how Kris was singing. Lawrence taylor wanted to know how it felt for David Uribe our current President, to be in the waning moments of his incumbency.

Speaker Highlights:
William Morris, President of the Academy of Oriental Medicine spoke to the club. Carolyn Beynon was so kind to be his subject. Will demonstrated channeling and tui na with Carolyn. A pain in the neck can be relieved by manipulation of the area and proper pressure in another part of the body such as a leg. She seemed to enjoy it. When Oriental laborers came to this country to build railroads they also brought their medicine with them. At the turn of the century there were many approaches to medicine. When Mr. Flexner was charged with inspecting medical schools for public funding he only accredited schools with pharmacy programs. In the 1990’s the Federal government became aware of the public spending money on supplements and the growing interesting in alternative treatments. Will explained there are now state and federal accreditations. His school is working with Seton Hospital to create a model where traditional and oriental medicine co exist in the same facility. Thank you Phyllis Sharp for inviting an interesting speaker.

Lawrence Taylor returned from North Carolina. He visited the Williamston, NC Club near where his family has farmed since 1763. Having few visitors the club took pictures of our Lawrence. He said his photo will not only be in the post office, but also in the newspaper. Carolyn Beynon complimented everyone on their hard work for the GSE team. Camille Miller’s daughter graduated from college. Suzanne Madeley is going on a cruise. She is also thankful for a beautiful sunrise that greeted her driving in this morning an Tim Flynn’s hug. Fred White’s son in law will stay in El Paso until he is completely well. He also likes Tim’s hug. Bill Bednar once again honors general principle. Richard Fatheree was glad Bobby Knight came to the Capitol. He had a pink coat on. Jerry Conn asked about a white carnation. Richard said it was missing. Karen Rima gave generously to the Loot Boot since she missed so much. Phyllis Sharp noted that she did not receive a hug from Tim. He gladly obliged her. Richard noted that the Loot Boot was full because of Tim and his hugging.

David Uribe reported that Carleton had made arrangements outside Capitol and Scott Jenkins inside. The Team was recognized from the House gallery and Senate floor. He thanked Phyllis Sharp for picking up lunches which were grabbed as they ran out the door to the Governor’s Mansion. They went to Aussie Bar. The team was very grateful for an enjoyable day. Club meets 7:30 June 6.

Helen LaFare shared her international adoption journey. She adopted 8 year old Natalie from the Ukraine about 5 years ago. She shared the many steps and the conditions in the Ukraine. After viewing her photo album, it is very obvious that the many years of trials were well worth it. After receiving the PolioPlus award, she acknowledged that she was pleased because she had polio as a child. Thank you Sarah Wannarka for inviting an interesting guest.

Bill Bednar supports general principle and glad to see democracy return to the legislature. Ben Ford is glad that the TYC bill is moving along well and hopes Senate Bill 206 succeeads. Visitor Jerry Don says his club was one of our sponsoring club and after 5 years he has finally made it to one of our meeting. The Laundry’s from the Oakhill Club relayed that the District Cruise is tomorrow and Jim Osborn expects us all to attend. Jerry Conn would give a dollar if someone would explain what Senate Bill 206 was about. Ben explained it was a bill to help prevent child care fraud. Phyllis Sharp was excited to see the Australian Group because she had enjoyed many good times with Australians when she raced ocean boats.

Speaker Highlights:
GSC Team spoke to our club. What an excellent exposure to Australia from a group that came from different locations of the country. Lawrence Taylor’s friend, D-Day veteran William Carrow celebrated his 91th birthday. Carleton Turner is on his way to the Kentucky Derby. Fred White passed out the team schedules and will be distributing the new ones with the new rotated team leaders.

David Uribe reminded the club of the board meeting Tuesday May 8. The GSC team will be here nesxt Wednesday. He encourages all to come and bring guest. Phyllis Sharp announced that the club banners are in. David Uribe will give her the names of the GSC members so each can have a certificate.

Speaker Highlights:
Kyle Schalafer Program Specialist from the Capitol Visitors Center spoke and gave a slide show to the club about the current exhibit of Frank Reaugh (1860-1945) exhibit at the Capitol Visitor Center. Pastel artist Frank Reaugh was the great chronicler of longhorns and the frontier in the Plains of Texas. He made his own pastels and designed his own lap easel. Each summer he took his students on a month long camp out and sketch trip to the remote Southwest. He drew rough sketches that were refined and enlarged when he returned to his Dallas studio. Austenite Lucretia Coke (91 years old) is his last surveying student. There are notable collections at the Ramsey Center and the Dallas library which he helped start. One of his works hangs in the oval office and one in the Lt. Governor Press Conference Room. Kyle encouraged us to attend the exhibit at the Capitol Visitor Center. Richard Fatheree was reminded of when Yogi Berra was asked about a fork in the road. He said,"Take it." Suzann Madeley thanked everyone for the card we all signed. Bill Bednar remembered a story about Lady Astor. She told Churchill if she were married to him she would poision his morning coffee. He replied that if she was his wife, "He would drink it." Ben Ford reported that the 34 Youth Before Self group was being recognized on the floors of the House and Senate. Carolyn and Lawrence complimented Ben on his work on the 11th Street clean up. Fred White reported that his son in law was back in the US until they figured out what was causing his back pain.

David Uribe reported that May 3 the GSE team would be the morning program. He learned that our new district governor Barry Curlee emphasis would be on public relations. Sarah Wannarka received her blue badge. David thanked her for all her work on the fundraiser Dues are due by May 31 allowing time to report to RI an accurate roster. The RI theme this year is Rotary Share.

Speaker Highlights:
Tom Harrison Ethic Commissioner and Executive Director for County Retirees spoke to the club about character and then answered questions about ethics. Character is moral excellence and firmness. It is not inherited but developed. It is reflected by our behavior when no one is looking. It is evident in how we treat those who can do us no good or can’t fight back. He finished by reading the poem Man in the Glass. Thank you Phyllis for inviting the speaker.

David Uribe reported the burgers were a hit and the club should continue this fundraiser. He suggested the club think about doing the event more than once a year. Karen reported that one third of the tickets were unsold. A final report will be presented to the club. Keep Austin Beautiful will be this Saturday April 21, 10:30. Kileen District meeting is also this Saturday. Meet on the east side of the Capitol, 6:30 am should you like to attend. Phyllis Sharp, Carleton Turner, Lawerence Taylor and David Uribe are attending. GSC group will be here May 9. Scott Jenkins has arranged for recognition from the House and Senatae floors. Speaker Highlights:
Nick Dauster Legislative Liaison spent three years living and working in Mexico. Upon returning to the states he saw the world from different perspective. He worked with Senator Zaffarini on nursing home reform and increasing the statue of limitation for child abuse. Also upon returning from Mexico he felt sympathy for those who enter our country for the first time. He now works with legal immigrants from all over the world teaching English. Thank you Phyllis Sharp for inviting the speaker.

John Brieden Commission of Veteran Affairs and passed Commander of the American Legion shared his thoughts on health care of returning wounded soldiers. Walter Reed gives excellent heath care, but with influx of wounded soldiers returning to the US there were limited beds. Old buildings that were marked for demolition were put back into use. With the closing of bases, came the closing of their hospitals. This put pressure on Walter Reed to keep vets housed. The VA has developed "centers of excellence" for a particular specialty like spine or mental health care. Battle field care has vastly improved since Viet Nam. So many interesting points were made followed by great discussion. Thank you Phyllis Sharp for inviting an interesting speaker.

Suzanne Madeley let us know to bring money to buy pralines from our next speaker former Black Panther who learned to make pralines in prison. David Uribe is grateful to be back from in Texas after visiting the State of New York. Phyllis Sharp thanked Bill Bedner for buying her a biscuit.

Announcements:
David Uribe asked everyone to sign a card that Phyllis Sharp brought for Fred White and his son in law who was injured and is in the hospital in Germany. He was injured by an IED in Iraq. Happy hour is today at Dog and Duck on Guadalupe at 17th. Those attending will decide the details of the next happy hour. Board meeting will be March 13. Keep Austin Beautiful 11th Street clean up will be March 31, 10:30, celebration to follow at Waller Creek Park. Karen Rima has sold 34/150 tickets for the April 11 fund raiser at Austin Playhouse. All members are asked to buy four $25.

Speaker Highlights:
Andrew Menter shared his knowledge of insurance and college students. Less than 3% of university campuses accept insurance in their health centers. None of the junior colleges have health centers. The health centers are funded by line item fees. One result is the lack of availability of health care. The centers are opened from 9-5 Monday through Friday with health care provided by doctors and nurse practitioners These providers are not accountable to review by outside provider. Lab tests generally need to be paid by students since they are not coded to insurance codes. There is a need for preventative care: one third of freshmen are on antidepressants and the number one teat run on students are for sexually transmitted diseases. Studies show capuses could actually make money for the health center by accepting insurance. There is resistance to change. Many more interesting points were made by Andrew Menter. Suzanne Madeley son is 29 today or maybe not. He was born February 29. Tim Flynn missed the last two weeks. He was pleased to see his badge was not retired and still in the box. Camille Miller was pleased to see that Paul Colbert was our speaker. She has been invited by her daughter to hear her defend her honor’s paper. When she was in Memphis she truly enjoyed the southern style of biscuits and gravy. Fred White just wanted to acknowledge that life is busy. Ben Ford announced that March 31 is our last Keep Austin Beautiful 11th Street clean up. Everyone needs to let him know their tee shirt size so he can order before event. Lawence Taylor wanted us to know last night’s news reported that an 89 year old woman in a wheelchair has been trapped for 90 days in her apartment because the elevator needed repair. Lawrence has received 89 emails so far and has no jurisdiction.

Announcements:
David Uribe went to the Foundation Dinner. President of Rotary International Robert Boyd gave a great speech. Even though the club is a 100% sustaining club it was not recognized. David will investigate. Karen Rima had tickets for the Austin Playhouse Fundraiser. Each member is asked to buy four $25 tickets. Phyllis Sharp and Lawrence Taylor will man the bar. Burgers served at 6:15.

Speaker Highlight:
Paul Colbert was House Chairman Budget Committee on Education for 8 of the 12 years he served in the House. School finance portion of HB72 (’84), Senate Bill 1 (’90), and school finance formulas (’99) clearly have his handprint. Money gets schools better teachers and better supplies which produces less blue collar workers. In the 21th century there are fewer jobs for those kids who are not educated. One stressor on the system is that the state is now required to educate the kids with disabilities and minorities. This is relative a new funding issue. From 1996 to 2006 the amount of dollars per student spend by the state did not increase. This put an increased burden on the local districts which caused higher taxes on property. When the caps were reached, then the districts were forced to reduce programs like art and increase the ratio of students to teacher. These few comments were just part of a very interesting talk. The club thanks Phyllis for inviting an encaging speaker.

She likes us. Today was her birthday. Everyone sang. Carleton Turner and Jerry Conn recognized her birthday. Ben Ford reminded us of the Foundation dinner. Our officers training will be in Kileen April 22. Carleton Turner will try to get a van so we can all go together.

Jason Stanford spoke to us about doing opposition research. Opposition research is factual documentation of a public servant’s voting record and other public comments. This information is used to help voters make well informed decisions. All information must be attained legally. His career started in Moscow working for a newspaper. It ended when Russian tanks started parking in front of residential homes. When he returned to the states he worked on Ann Richard campaign. Recently, he worked for the Chris Bell campaign. What an enjoyable morning getting to know a fellow member and learning about an unusual job.

Karen Rima went to college in New York where the snow is now 7 feet deep. Lawrence Taylor heard Jason Standford on NBR. Mary Gordon Spence said that Jason Standford was very handsome and articulate in his radio interview. She also wore a crown celebrating she was elected Valentine Queen in the first grade. Jerry Conn and Mary Gordon Spence had their own special Rotary breakfast together last Wednesday. Mary Gordon bought us all candy. She could not find the bag this morning, so she brought us all heart shaped crackers.

Announcements:
Today was club assembly. David Uribe and the board directors reported to the club. Fred White reported that our last 11th Street cleanup will be March 31. There will be a celebration after the clean up at Waller Creek for every Keep Austin Beautiful team in the city. Fred encouraged all of us to attend. Carleton Turner reported that as of yet the club does not have a student RYLA nominee. He pointed out another way to participate is to have our club pay for a meal and supply people to help serve a meal. The catfish dinner planed for the Fourth of July needs a sponsor and volunteers. Yesterday the board appropriated $400 for the dinner should the club be supportive. Camiller Miller moved and Mary Gordon Spence seconded that the club should spend $400 for the RYLA catfish dinner on July 4. Motion passed. David Uribe reported that the GSE team from Australia will be here May 9. The board has agreed to host the team for one day. The team will speak to us at the morning meeting and receive a proclamation. Scott Jenkins will take on that responsibility. Carleton Turner will be responsible for the rest of the day’s activities. Promoting international understanding Group Study Exchange (GSE) pairs non Rotarian groups to travel to their counterpart’s country. Spring fundraiser will be April 11, 6pm at the Austin Playhouse. The price of the ticket will include a meal of hamburgers. Karen Rima has asked each member to buy four tickets, which members can use themselves or sell. David entertained the idea of having a scaled down silent auction. The commitment to Rotary International for a $100 per member per year was reached last year by our find raiser. This year members may have to make up the difference should the club not raise $3,500. Phyllis Sharp asked the club would they rather have a picnic on the front lawn of the Capitol or a happy hour after work for their social event. Unanimously the club wanted a happy hour on Thursday for their social event. Phyllis asked for suggestions for locations. Those who could remember the name of the bars they had attended gave suggestions.

Roger Starkley announced that today is Orange and Maroon Day at the Capitol. Scott Jenkines said it was the day we all got along. Ben Ford thanked everyone who showed up for the 11th Street cleanup. He is glad that the last one is March 31. Fred White thanked Ben for finding and returning his cell phone he dropped. Scott added, "You better check your minutes first." Karen Rima thought that a conference table arrangement was conducive to good conversation. She suggested that we try moving tables together in the Grill. Camille Miller’s daughter will be teaching in the Mississippi Delta region. Phyllis Sharp had added "age" to the sign in sheet. She announced that the oldest member was 99 year old Camille Miller. Jason Stafford announced the youngest member was 19 year old Carleton Turner.

Carmen Cortes Harms Director of Protection for the Mexican Consulate shared her knowledge of the consulate’s duties. The consulate job is to protect Mexican Nationals while in our country. The consulate issues photo ID cards that can be used for banking and establishing a way to pay bills. They also serve as human rights advocates and help with civil law issues.

Suzann Madeley congratulated Richard Fatheree for winning the seven meter marathon to be first in line. Richard responded that Suszann went to the front door so she could be the first in line. He was at the back door. He made it there first. Tim Flynn noticing that Mary Gordon Spence did not have her name badge on and gave a $1 so she he did not have to listen to her sing. Ben Ford reminded the club of the 11th Street cleans up. Lawrence Taylor said his granddaughter Nati said her intelligible statement, "I love you Gramps." Sarah Wannarka who sits on the Bastrop Board of Child Advocacy announced that the board was having a fund raiser in Smithville, March 3, $75. Camille Miller said that the bill reducing the uninsured to 1/3 of its current number would be presented today. Carleton Turner wanted everyone to know his new email address is londonlonghorn@wildblue.net . Mary Gordon Spence is still the unquitter. Fred White’s son is recovering from shrapnel surgery in Iraq.

Jill Weir, Director of Operations for Junior Achievement presented their non profit organization goals and accomplishments. Junior Achievement (JA) is the world’s largest and fastest growing non profit economic education organization that prepares young people for the world of work. Volunteers teach in the US and 100 other countries. All funding is secured from corporate and private donations. The program begins in kindergartner and ends in high school. Fred White announced that Team C will be hosting the Ronald McDonald dinner in February. Karen Rima got a Texas flag from Mary Gordon Spence without a dole. The dole was removed at airport security. Karen added a dole from another flag and exchanged it in Arkansas. She did something in Puerta Rico. Jenz Daufeldt announced that this is his last meeting in the US and will miss us very much. Suzann Madeley was very glad to see the snow. Ben Ford thanked everyone for bringing food and Carleton Turner for preparing the chili for the DPS officer’s thank you luncheon. Representative Drew Darby said he likes any group who start their meeting with "is it the truth." Becky Young was glad to see everyone. She will be working for the TEA External Affairs.

Speaker Highlights:
The District’s two Ambassadorial Scholars Lauren Denny and Jean Elliott shared their application process and history of the program. The program began in 1947 and has served 37,000 students from a 100 different countries. The purpose is to have the students spread the tenets of Rotary International while studying a year abroad. The last part of the application process is an interview with the committee. They each were incredibly qualified through their educational and volunteer experiences. Both look forward to this life changing event and sharing this with the clubs in the district.

Speaker:
Highlights from Lawrence Taylor’s talk about the concept of an elevator into outer space. This is totally feasible with today’s knowledge and information on the horizon. Built of carbon nanotubes this elevator will provide cheap travel into outer space. There are many challenges such as magnetic fields and natural vibrations of earth. But, there are many advantages. On a platform in outer space with no atmosphere generating energy from the sun is much easier and eliminates pollution, sending spacecrafts into space will take little effort, and ease of communication will increase. Thank you Lawrence for speaking to the club. Truly you demonstrated the principle of thinking of "others before self."

Announcements: The fundraiser will be April 11 at Austin Playhouse. Steal Magnolias will be playing. Suggestion to make the event more successful was to serve food. Starting in January wearing our name tags is a must, unless you want to sing or pay a dollar. Everyone keep up the good work on the Buddy System. Carleton Turner will be attending the workshop for RYLA and will be our club representative. David Uribe asked for other fundraiser ideas. Lawrence Taylor shared his idea of donating to the club and receiving an opportunity to draw a winning card at the beginning of each meeting. Sarah Wannarka said that the Bastrop club set out flags six times a year for a $100 and also does a fish fry with a big item drawing. Bob Hunter said his club also does the flag fundraiser which is very successful. Visiting Rotarian Lee Yeakel said that the downtown club did an annual asking which collected about $40,000. Bob Hunter said that a Capitol intern program sponsored by the our Rotary Club would be idea worth exploring.

Camille Miller’s daughter is going to join Teachers of America program. She gave a dollar for general principle for Bill Bedner and she still has Chris Currens cake plate. (Chris she left the plate in the club box). Ben Ford gave $100 toward the Blaine Immunization Project. He reminded everyone of the 11th Street clean up this Saturday. Bob Hunter found out this morning that Carleton Turner had resigned from his job. He will be missed greatly. Carleton Turner reiterated that his retirement was effective at the end of this December. Lawrence Taylor announced with great pride that he has a new granddaughter. Carleton Turner needs help for tomorrow night Ronald McDonald supper. Jerry Conn gave thanks to Jens Daufeldt for being in the ready box ready to speak to our club. Rebecca Young thanked everyone for all their support as she is stepping down from the Speaker’s office looking for new opportunities.

David Uribe has been recognized by the board for a Paul Harris following the club’s contribution of $1000 for the Blain project. Highlights The Unification of German---Jens Daufeldt is a German lawyer working in the United States for a three month period for Bill Davidson as part of his continuing education. German reunification took place October 3, 1990. After World War II Germany was divided into four zones, but with the advent of the Cold War tension the Federal Republican replaced the zones. During the division of East and West Germany, the West developed a social market economy leading to prosperity and the East remained communist with a poor economy. When the wall fell West Germany inherited a very poor brother who to this day takes up the vast majority of taxes collected by the West. All the social and political problems that one would expect are present. Thank you Jerry Conn for inviting this very interesting speaker.

Bob Hunter thanked our club for the wonderful reception in the Lt. Governor Reception Room. He will never forget the morning. Camille Miller bought Chris Curren’s carrot cake at the silent auction last year and said it was wonderful. She also gave a dollar for Ben Ford not having the 11th Street clean up in 29 degree weather. Ben Ford said that he will move the date to December 9 and will send out a reminder. Phyllis Sharp remembered Senator Madla and asked for prayer for his wife. Suzann Madeley shared that her daughter in law is carrying a baby with a chromosome disorder and the baby will not survive after delivery. I know she will be in all our thoughts and prayers as she and her family passes through this difficult time. Scott Jenkines said that they are moving offices for 32 more square feet. Carleton Turner was going to give a dollar for Karen Rimer’s A&M football victory, but instead he gave a dollar for the men who have to move Scott’s office. Jerry Conn gave a dollar for the two no show speakers and one for the possibility of one of our guests sharing his home country of Germany with us. (The speaker walked in after he donated to the loot boot.

Announcements:
David Uribe announced that the board had decided to donate $1000 to the Blane Immunization Program. The first $500 will come out of the treasurer. The remaining $500 will come from individual member’s donation. Camille Miller will make the last donation ensuring that the $500 is obtained. David Uribe shared the Presidential Citation that had been given by Ronney Reynolds at the breakfast for Bob Hunter. After the club meeting the board had a called meeting. There was general agreement that David Uribe will be given credit for the $1000 donation and will become a Paul Harris fellow.

Speaker:
George Shipley is a long time campaign advisor for state, national and international races, has taught at the LBJ School, and is a friend of Ben Barnes who could not come today. The change in Washington from a Republican to Democrat majority is a fundamental change. He said he did not expect to see this in his life time. The major reasons were the middle class felt that the government was too close too corporations and that they were left out; the corruptions and scandals were a factor and the dissatisfaction with the Iraq. This was not a Democrat win but a move to oust the Republicans. The Democrats had no major agenda to attract voters. Party identification may be out dated with the voters using sources like the internet for information instead of the political party as a source. He says he expects to see taxes go up, investigation into a balanced budget and more money for scholarships. The results from the governor’s race represent the make up of Texas voters 40% Republican, 30% Democrat and 30 % independent. He feels that if the session does not address the new business taxes and education there will difficulties for incumbents. There were so many more interesting ideas. Tim Flynn wished Happy Birthday to Phyllis Sharp by having the club sing Happy Birthday to her. Karen Rima said she was glad that she can now turn on TV without having to watch all those political ads. Becky Young was sure we all wanted the Cuero Gobblers football update. They won the district champion ship and will play this weekend. Fred White also wished Phyllis a Happy Birthday and has changed jobs. Richard Fatheree wished to remember two great presidents George Washington and Fred Hanson. Ben Ford gave to the loot boot in memory of West Virginia football. Fred Hanson said at their club they have a tradition of paying for people not to sing. He gave $5 for our club not to sing again. There was much laughter today.

Fred Hanson thanked our club for participating in to the Blane Project. Young students entering the medical field will now be able to off set their immunizations cost. Speaker Craig Schroer from Drug Policy Forum of Texas shared his opinions on the war on drugs. He began by asking, "Do you think what we are doing to prevent drug use is working?" The drug industry is the fourth major industry in line with textiles. He feels that not all drugs are the same and need to be treated as such. He did not support legalizing them, but using them under controlled supervision. The Netherlands have a form of controlled use which is successful because the crime and insurance rates have gone down. Tim Flynn made the comment that William F. Buckley said that the war on drugs is like the first people who tried to fly by flapping wing-like structures as they dove off cliffs. Suzann Madeley saw Jason Standford at the Chris Bell head quarters. He is Chris Bell’s campaign chair. She said that he misses us. Richard Fatheree congratulated Carleton Tuner on the UT win against his alma mater Texas Tech. Sally Hanners congratulated Richard Fatheree for his work with the Austin Ballet. He was on stage Saturday night. After kidding it was established that he was not dancing. Rick Henderson our guest speaker was so excited that he is going to be a grand father. Lawrence Taylor’s wife is having a birthday this weekend and wants a rifle for her present. It was suggested that maybe a BB gun would be safer for him. Ben Ford announced that West Virginia was still in the field for number one. Phyllis Sharp suggested that we sing Happy Birthday to Carleton Turner. All joined in. She said that it was the best dollar she ever spent.

Speaker:
Rick Henderson shared interesting stories from the telecommunications industries. He has been associated with national and international companies and their inventions. He first mentioned that when he entered the Capitol it was such a great pleasure to walk freely about the building. Part of the workings of the key board word processing had an abbreviated name CAT. The mouse got its name because it followed the CAT. A Seiko watch was developed that had a one year battery, could put a 15 digit number, and send and receive messages. He passed around a prototype. This project never went forward. The beginning breakup of AT&T began when Tom Carter had added a small wire spiral to the side of his phones that held a pencil. The repair man refused to work on the phone because it has been altered. Mr. Carter sued AT&T and won. The wire going to the phones now were not directly wired, but had a plug. The downfall for AT&T was when MCI has a microwave system along IH 55 that allowed truckers to talk to their dispatchers. When ATT discovered that part of the system used their phone lines, they informed them that MCI couldn’t use their lines. MCI took AT&T to court. Judge Green’s decision was to split up AT&T. Rick Henderson is now developing another international company.

He then mentioned to Richard Fatheree that Texas was playing Texas Tech this weekend. Grant Sparks said that Jackson Hole had an elk archway that had been donated by the Rotarian. He said his trial last week went well. Allison Bellodeau has been on leave from the Capitol. She misses us.

Gena VanOsselaer from the Austin Children’s Shelter was introduced by Allison Billodeau. This non profit organization serves children birth to 17 years who are taken from their home because of neglected or abused. Thirty children are served a month. Two out of three kids are turned away. The shelter provides a stable home like environment. Children are prepared for what lies ahead for them. For health need there is a physician assistant on duty. Academic needs are a point of focus. There is even a preschool teaching the children basic knowledge. And individual therapy is provided for all. With 250 volunteers each child receives individual care much like a parent would do in a home. Good news: the home will have a new larger facility near the new Children’s Hospital in June 2008. Suzann said should any one be interested in watching the film to let her know. Sarah Wannarka said that Grant Sparks is in a trial in Waco. Bill Bedner said that Suzann Madeley’s sharing reminded him of a peddy cab story that he would share at another time. Ben Ford put a dollar for memory of the Four Way Test. Fred White is now working for the Texas Veteran Commission. He is on his way to Missouri for a reunion with his frat brothers. Scott Jenkines thanked everyone for wearing their name badges.

Speaker Bill Kuntz Executive Director of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation was introduced by Lawrence Taylor. Lawrence said that he knew he was in the right place when at the first town meeting Bill said "our job is the help people and make a difference in their lives." Since 1909 the commission has had many different duties and names. In 1999 the commission was up for sunset, but saved by the governor’s veto. When Bill came on board they were 1.4 million dollars in the hole and not functionally aligned. Today they license or regulate 27 different groups. Some are barbers, cosmetology, combative sports, talent agencies, auctioneers, water well drillers, elevators, air conditioning contractors and more. They have commissioners who are not in the respective industries and an advisory board who have members who are very involved in their industries. Through good stewardship many licenses now have reduced fees. Thank you Lawrence.

Scott Jenkines said he was impressed with the American Youth Works campus after his visit. Go Detroit Tigers and Long Horns! Astrid Bernstorff was glad to be back. Karen Rima shared a picture of Steven Kling when he was in Afganistan that appeared in the A&M Muster. Kristi Stutterfield’s group is in the top 50 fastest growing trade shows. Hunter and Fisher each earned cell phones from good grades from school. Jerry Conn will miss two meetings because he and his wife are going on an island bike trip. Richard Fatheree said he feels like the one armed man on the Fugitive as he is recovering from rotator cup surgery. Camille Miller said the 11th Street clean up was a great success. She just returned from visiting the Tarrant County Psychiatric unit of the jail. Sex crimes convicts are the fastest growing population group of the unit. David Uribe shared that while at the clean up he met two friends from St. Louis just walking down the street.

Announcements:
Scott Jenkines reported that the membership committee encourages each member to wear their badges and pins. Their committee will meet the fouth Wednesday of each month after the regular meeting. They are developing a buddy system to help retention. They will use the sign in sheet to track members. David Uribe reported that the board has donated $250 to the Bland Project. This project pays for the immunizations for ACC health career students. It will be matched at the district and international level. Bob Hunter appreciation breakfast will be November 15 in the Lieutentant Governor’s Reception Room behind the Senate chambers.

Lawrence Taylor shared the history of the elevator with our club. The first elevators were made to move material with the help of mules and men using a pulley system. With the development of cities the price of land rose creating a need for more efficient use of land. In order to stack people the need for elevators grew. Elisha Otis is the recognized as the inventer of the safe elevator. Basic kinds of elevators are hydraulic, geared and gearless. The Eiffel Tower in Paris was still running on the original hydraulic system until just a few years ago. Most elevators are electric geared. Elevators are essential to our lives. Can you imagine a hospital without an elevator? Lawrence was interesting and entertaining.

Alzheimer Memory Walk was a good time shared with Phyllis Sharp, Steven Foster, and Jason Earle. The club raised $325. Baskets and Blankets has been postponed.

Speaker David Johnson spoke to us about the Youth Exchange Program. Students 15-18 years of age are exchanged for a year or a month. Applications are due by October 31. It is one of the highest rated exchange programs in the world. It is in the process of being certified by the Secretary of State. The committee looks for good students who are mature. They need to present themselves as ambassadors for their country. It cost about $5,000 for the students. They live in homes of families which may or may not be Rotarian. The students may or may not be from Rotarian families. Since the students must speak the language of their visiting club one good place to look for exchange students is upper level language classes. David Johnson shared what a great experience he and his family has had host numerous students.

He let the club know that Patrick Reinhart’s father in law passed away. Camille Miller complimented Mary Gordon Spence for her article on Ann Richards in the American Statesman. Carlolyn Beynon felt that in about of weeks that Frank Beynon would be able to attend the meeting and receive his Paul Harris. She shared that Frank’s tumor has returned and he is in Hospice care. Suzann Madeley also complimented Mary Gordon Spence on her article. She needs volunteers to help her with the Ronald McDonald dinner the first Thursday in October. Our guest Don Conway from Minnesota was glad he could find our meeting place. Fred White encouraged and reminded everyone about the Memory Walk September 30.

Club Business:
David Uribe read the thank you note from Brenda and Jim Osbon for the flag flown over the Capitol the day of their visit. He officially welcomed Sarah Wannarka as a transferring member from Bastrop and gave her a red badge.

Speaker Steve Murdock the official State Demographer and Director of the State Data Center at The University of Texas explained the changes in rate and sources of the Texas population. Texas has one of the fastest growing populations in the United States with about 3.5 million a decade. Our numbers are critical because Texas represents the future composition of the United States. Should the state continue growth as it is now, the state will have an aging Anglo population with a large young Hispanic uneducated population. The average mean household income will be $6,000 less in real dollars. This stresses and strains the tax structure, services for health and education needs. He feels that the state has a widow of opportunity to plan for the future. In order to keep the state’s level of prosperity, the state must have an education population. Income is directly proportionate to education. Steve ended with a quote from George Bernand Shaw: "The mark of a truly educated man is to be moved deeply by statistics." Suzann Madeley thanked Carleton Turner for bringing the projector even though our speaker had not arrived. Carleton Turner thanked Suzann Madeley for reminding him to bring the projector. Becky Young asked that we remember Representative Linda Dawson who passed away. She was able to give flowers to a young boy’s funeral from those donated to her. The family was not able to purchase flowers. Ben Ford gave to the loot boot for relatives leaving. Chris Currens went to St. David’s rehab to visit with Frank Beynon and he is doing well. Fred White encouraged all to attend the Memory Walk on September. So far Phyllis Sharp, Fred White, and David Uribe are going. Carleton Turner encouraged those who were not going to donate to the team. Phyllis Sharp thanked everyone for their kind words last week. She also acknowledged the past presidents Camille Miller, Ben Ford and Richard Fatheree in the spirit of our club’s fourth anniversary. Lawrene Taylor noted that Camille Miller and Karen Rima had made a combined donation of $250. David Uribe wanted us to recognize Bob Hunter one of our founding members on our anniversary.

Club Business:
Carleton Turner reported that at the board meeting yesterday dues policy was discussed. Dues are due June 1. May 1 the secretary will send out a written statement. June 15 members who have not responded will be contacted by a board member. At that time members who would like to make arrangements to pay may put in writing their request to the board. Carleton Turner said that membership retention was our priority. This will be voted on at the next board meeting. He encouraged input. David Uribe commented that this a way to formalize our policy. June 30 roster count is the basis for Rotary International accounting.
Ben Ford and his team served a Cat Fish dinner to Ronald McDonald House folks. Suzann Madeley will head up October and Phyllis Sharp November. Suzann Madeley asked for volunteers to help her.

Speaker Rupert Issacson author of Healing Lands spoke to us about the Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert. He has been working to return the Bushmen back to their native land. Over time they have been killed or moved to resettlements. One area at a time he and his team are puttung people back on their land. At one time Bushmen were hunted much like sport. It was not until 1948 that killing Bushmen was illegal. It has been a battle of hunter gatherers verses farmers. This group of people carry the blueprint of humanity. "Eve" the woman who had DNA common to all races was discovered here. The people have ochre skin color and slightly slanted eyes. They have incredible skill in healing and live until their nineties. They have proved themselves great mediators by the very fact they have existed hundreds of thousands of years living in small groups . David Uribe announced that the Dead President’s Club will continue through Labor Day Weekend. He also asked everyone to attend the Board Meeting on September 12. We will be discussing dues policy. This directly affects each of us. Input is needed.

Grant Sparks enjoyed Andrew Weber’s leaving the court party last night and that he had two children who were able to ride the bus to school. Lawrence Taylor announced that he is now riding the bus like Mary Gordon Spence from Leander to Austin. For $2 he says it’s the best deal in town. His grandson was playing Spider Man and broke his arm. Camille Miller announced that she, Ben Ford, and Carolyn Beynon had pulled together enough money to honor Frank Beynon with a Paul Harris. Her husband is having his retirement party tonight. She has her honey do list ready. Becky Young honored her guests Tom Ben and Stacy Williams. Suzann Madeley said she was sorry that she could not attend Andrew Weber’s party. She had a scrap booking deadline. Mary Gordon Spence said she was sorry that she had not been invited. She will be going to Costa Rico with seven other artists and writers for a month.

Our own Rotarian Commander Grant Sparks from the Attorney General Office spoke to us about the Cyber Crime Unit which includes Crimes against Children Task Force and Project Safe Childhood. One in seven teens receives an unwanted online request to engage in sexual activity or provide sexual information. One in four is exposed to pornography on line. He has 15 investigators, 3 prosecutors, and an on line investigative lab. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is the clearing house for reports from the public. www.missingkids.com His agency received $300,000 grant from the Federal Government to investigate, prosecute, and train other enforcement agencies how to work a crime. Proactively, they have undercover agents who go on line to find predators. They search websites like My Space.com and Yahoo chat rooms. Reactively, the agency receives referrals from local, state and federal agencies. They have arrested 87 since 2003. He showed the most entertaining and incitive clip from Saturday Night Live about a group of men and a mom who were learning how to use My Space. Ben Ford pointed out that the state of West Virginia is not increasing in diversity as are other states. Bob Hunter reported that he had witnessed a car thief in Brownwood. Scott Jenkines pointed out the hand out announcing Representative Bob Hunter retirement party, Thursday October 26, 2006, Dallas Texas, Chaired by Governor Perry, Lt. Governor Dewdhurst, and Speaker Tom Craddick. Bill Bedner congratulated Suzann Madeley on her extraordinary work and accomplishments at the Supreme Court. Jim Osbon gave a dollar saying if we keep talking than his speech will be short. Mary Gordon Spence gave a flag from the Downtown Club and said she had ridden the bus to the meeting. Phyllis Sharp reminded the club about the ½ price tickets for the play Dead President’s Club. Andrew Weber announced that he had cut his vacation short because his daughter gave birth to Ingrid Elizabeth Smith.

Speaker:
District Governor Jim Osbon from the Oak Hill club is a 7 time Paul Harris with perfect attendance. He is retired from the hotel business and now raises miniature Hefers. Barry Curlee also attended as he is the District Governor Elect. Bill Boyd is president of RI. Jim shared that Bill felt every Rotarian was equal and family involvement was important. The theme this year is Lead the Way. The emphasis this year is water, health and hunger, literacy, and family of Rotary. For information on the TB project go to www.RIBorderTB.org . Our District Conference will be May 10-14 on a cruise ship. The Bi-District will be in Tampico, Mexico. Jim is looking into getting our district a chartered plane. Foundation Dinner will be in March. Camille Miller celebrates her wonderful trip to Hawaii, asked for a prayer as her institute is in transition, and remembered Frank. Richard Fatheree introduced his guests his wife Vickie and granddaughter Abigail Lamb. He said he was grateful that Abigail went to a school that allowed the Pledge of Alligence to be said daily. Carole Bleaknewy with her 10 pounds of fruit had a difficult time getting into the Ronald McDonald House and wanted to advise Carleton Turner of it.

Announcements:
Jerry Conn made arrangements with Austin Playhouse for our club to see the very political and funny play Dead President's Club on August 25. Call and make your own reservation mentioning you are a memberof our club for 1/2 price tickets. After the play we can mingle with the cast.

David Uribe thanked Carleton Turner for presiding over the last meeting. He was ill. The board meeting has been moved to August 16 following the club meeting. All are invited to attend.

Loot Boot:
Phyllis Sharp mentioned that Jessie Santos had passed. A long time worker for the Senate was truly a giving and kind man. Sarah Wannarka’s sister and nephews are on their way here by car, she wishes them a safe journey and a fun weekend. Ben Ford said that Phyllis Sharp had the updated rosters and to please let him know of any changes. Suzann Madeley is retiring from the Supreme Court after 26 years of service. Bill Bedner gave in support of general principles.

Speaker:
Vannessa from the Foundation for Devine Consciousness spoke to us. Their mission is to spread peace and unity to individuals though out the world. First each of us must look deep inside ourselves and assess who we are and what we have to give. Then to give selflessly without agenda will give us peace and unity within our selves. Once we discover our inner self than we can spread unity and peace. She said Rotary is much like the Foundation in that we serve others first. Opportunity is not at the door, but literally at our feet. The need for unity and peace is innate. No matter who we are connected to as a spiritual head, she wants us all to come together from that spot. She went to Nigeria and meet with top government officials. After the "grand tour" she asked to go out into the villages. In the village of Keyla she found very poor people who had the spirit of community. This has become their project. First they put in two water wells to stop all the diseases that are spread by dirty water. Next they started free schools. At their Austin summer camp, six children from Nigeria came. She invited us to step out of our comfort zone and help out at the camp. The foundation has started camps in Hawaii. Next year she is planning on a world conference of children. Loot Boot: Ben Ford talked to one of Frank’s daughters and said that he should be back in a few weeks. Allison Billodeau was glad that Steve Kling was back so they could go to the dog park. Jerry Conn encourages all to go to the new play Dead Presidents at the Austin Play House beginning August 3. Steve Kling is glad to be back alive from Afghanistan. He said 10,000 were not as fortunate. Carleton Turner celebrates his wife’s birthday today. Bob Hunter said that his guest Alec San Martin worked for Tommy Merritt and was a great San Antonio man. Mark Kapner suggests we see Who Killed the Electric Car coming out this Friday at the Arbor. Beatice Curry hopes the Middle East Crisis works out peacefully because it affects the whole world. Alex San Martin said he was sad to see that this Bob Hunter’s last term. Andrew Weber will be out of town for the next two weeks, part of which will be in the cool New Mexico mountains.

Guests: Lee Easter from Northwest Austin shared that his club sold fruit at Christmas and made $57,000. He also shared this joke. To a friend, did you know that lions make love 11 times a day? No, darn I just joined Rotary. Steve Kling our member who went into the military is back from Afghanistan. He worked in civil affairs, "pistol packing Peace Corp."

Speaker Charlie Jackson spoke on economic development in a war zone. In Iraq women do not have the same support as men when it comes to infrastructure. His group helps them to create business. With safer working conditions and readily available electricity women have moved to Jordon to learn their skills with the hope of returning to Baghdad when it is more peaceful. Iraq is the bread basket of the Middle East. It is in the Fertile Crescent. It is the second largest proven oil reserve in the world. Electricity is available 4 to 8 hours a day. Before the war, there was twenty hours a day. Generators have become the source of much electricity using millions of gallons of gasoline and producing pollution. Manufacturing major product is equipment for oil production. Clothing and furniture are also made. There are forty new TV stations, twenty-five new radio stations, and a hundred newspapers. There are one hundred million cell phones. There are 14,121 public schools. Many children are malnourished. It is a county with many religious groups and ethnicities. Rotary Minute: David Uribe met with the Speakers Committee. Members are Jerry Conn, Bill Davidson, Suzann Madeley, and Phyllis Sharp. He reported that this year he is looking forward to great speakers. He encouraged members to help find strong speakers. Should anyone wish to add a speaker, they should go to the yahoo group site or telephone any of the members for assistance.

Loot Boot: Chris Currens encouraged his son to go fishing and got the biggest drum fish he had ever seen. Karen Rimer was glad to see Mary Gordon Spence. Fred White brought back a flag Ybor City Rotary in Florida. He also brought a copy of their award winning newsletter that was passed around. Carole Bleakney let the club know that Sally Hanners’ mother passed away. Tim Flynn put in a dollar because he missed last week. He said if he told us what happened we would not believe him. Becky Young brought back a tee shirt from Salada Rotary Club in Colorado. The club sponsors a Fourth of July stage event. Ben Ford remembered Frank Beynon. Phyllis Sharp put in money from Lawrence Taylor for the Ronald McDonald team that served dinner the first Thursday of July. The team consisted of Lawrence Taylor, Andrew Weber, Bill Davidson, Jerry Conn, Carole Bleakney, Allison Billodeau, and Phyllis Sharp.

Speaker: Arthur Sacamoto reported the forming of the 442th Infantry Battalion of Japanese Americans in World War II was a turning point in history. While hundreds of Japanese Americans were in internment camps the 442th received more purple hearts than any other battalion. One of the noted battles was their rescue of 211 Texans trapped in France. Their great achievements help change laws allowing Japaneses to become citizens, to marry whites, and set the stage for new racial relations. The children of their enemy earned respect.

AT LAUNCH THE NEAREST PERSON IS APPROXIMATELY THREE MILES AWAY. THE WATER TOWER DUMPS ITS CONTAINS AT LAUNCH TO SQUELCH FLAME. THE SMOKE SEEN AT LAUNCH IS THE VAPOR OF HEATED WATER. UNTIL RECENTLY THE VEHICLE ASSEMBLY BUILDING WAS THE LARGEST ENCLOSED SPACE IN THE WORLD. NO HUMAN HAND CAN TOUCH THE ORBITOR. THE OILS OF THE HAND AFFECT THE HEAT DISTRIBUTION. THE PAD WHERE GRISHAM, WHITE AND CHAFFEE DIED IS MARKED BY A PLAQUE. HE ENDED WITH A SLIDE THAT READ MAN IS AN EXPLORER. WE WILL CONTINUE TO EXPLORE STARS. WITH TEN CATERING TRUCKS, OVER 6,000 VOLUNTEERS, THIS IS ONE OF THE LARGEST PROJECTS IN TEXAS. THERE ARE EIGHT TRUCKS IN AUSTIN, ONE IN SAN ANTONIO AND ONE IN LOUISIANA RESULTING FROM A RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPED AFTER KATRINA. THE MOST DESIRED ITEM IS SOCKS AND SECOND IS A HARD BOILED EGG. ALL THE FOOD IS BOUGHT WHOLE SALE. THE GROUP HAS STARTED HABITAT ON WHEELS, PROVINDING TRAVEL TRAILERS AS HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS. EVENTUALLY, THEY WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A PARK OF TRAILER HOMES AND TENT CAMPING MUCH LIKE KOA. THE NEWEST PROJECT IS MLF. FIRST HE GAVE A HISTORY OF GIVING TO THE FOUNDATION. AT ONE TIME MEMBERS WERE ENCOURAGED TO OBTAIN THEIR PAUL HARRIS, $1000 ACCUMULATED DONATIONS. ROTARY INTERNATIONAL REALIZED THAT AFTER FULFILLING THAT GOAL, MEMBERS DWINDLED IN GIVING, THEREFORE RI CHANGED ITS EMPHASIS AND WENT TO A CONSTANT GIVING IN SMALLER AMOUNTS. EVERY ROTARIAN GIVING EVERY YEAR, $100 PER MEMBER PER YEAR, WOULD CREATE SUSTAINING MEMBERS. A SUSTAINING CLUB WOULD BE ONE IN WHICH EVERY MEMBER HAD GIVEN SOME AMOUNT (OR THE CLUB GAVE MONEY IN THEIR NAME) AND THE AVERAGE WAS $100 PER MEMBER. THE DONATED MONEY GOES INTO THE APF ACCOUNT AND IS USED FOR WORLD PEACE AND UNDERSTANDING. THE MONEY IS KEPT BY RI FOR THREE YEARS. DURING THAT TIME, THE INTEREST IS USED TO RUN THE PROGRAM. AFTER THE THREE YEARS HALF THE MONEY IS SENT BACK TO THE DISTRICT TO BE DISTRIBUTED BY THE DISTRICT GOVERNOR AND HALF IS KEPT BY RI. THE MONEY CAN BE USED FOR AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLARS, GROUP STUDIES, AND DISTRICT ASSISTANT GRANTS THAT ARE REQUESTED BY INDIVIDUAL CLUBS. WHEN THE GOVERNOR IS DECIDING HOW THE DISTRICT FUNDS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED TO EACH CLUB, HE WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE SUSTAINING CLUB STATUS OF THE REQUESTING CLUB. EACH DOLLAR GIVEN BY A MEMBER EARNS HIM CREDIT TOWARD PAUL HARRIS($100 EQUALS 100 CREDITS). THE MEMBER CAN USE HIS CREDITS TOWARD HIS OWN PAUL HARRIS ($1000 EQUALS 1000 CREDITS) OR HE CAN DESIGNATE THAT THE CREDITS BE MOVED TO ANOTHER MEMBER TO HELP HIM GET PAUL HARRIS. EXAMPLE, DAVID HAS GIVEN $800 (800 CREDITS) TOWARD HIS PAUL HARRIS. HE NEEDS 200 MORE CREDITS TO MEET THE 1000 CREDIT REQUIREMENT. PHYLLIS HAS 500 CREDITS IN HER ACCOUNT (SHE HAS GIVE $500 TO APF). THE NEW CHILDREN FRIENDLY HOSPITAL IS DESIGNED TO SERVE LITTLE ONES NEEDS AND THEIR FAMILIES. THE ENLARGED SPACE WILL HOUSE A BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT CENTER, REATTACHMENT OF LIMBS FACILITY AND A CRITICAL CARE UNIT. THE HOSPITAL WILL HAVE 480,000 SQUARE FEET AND SERVE 48 COUNTIES. IT WILL BE SETON OWNED AND OPERATED.

SOME OF THEIR ACTIVITIES ARE HANDS ON HOUSING, REPAIRS HOUSES THE ELDERLY WHOSE INCOME IN LESS THAN $12,000 PER YEAR, CROP WALK, ENGLISH AS SECOND LANGUAGE FOR REFUGEES, SPANTON BURIAL FUND (HELPS WITH PART OF THE EXPENSES OF BURIALS), AND DIALOGUE CONFERENCES ALLOWING MINISTERS OF DIFFERENT FAITHS TO EXCHANGE IDEAS. INDIVIDUALS ARE WELCOME TO BECOME MEMBERS.

LOOT BOOT: BECKY YOUNG SHARED THAT THE KATRINA FAMILY SHE HAS BEEN HELPING HAS MOVED INTO THEIR OWN HOME. THE FINAL FOUR WERE AMERICAN YOUTH WORKS, RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE (PREPARE DINNER ONCE A MONTH), AISD, AND CARITAS. THE CLUB VOTED AND RONALD MCDONAL HOUSE WILL BE OUR COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT.

OUR SPEAKER WAS CHARLIE SCHNABEL. WHILE SERVING AS CHIEF OF STAFF FOR CONGREESSMAN CHARLES WILSON HE BECAME INVOLVED IN AFGANISTAN. THE AFGANISTAN PEOPLE LIVING IN VERY RUGGED TERRAIN ARE FIERCE FIGHTERS WHO LOVE THEIR FREEDOM. HE POINTED OUT THAT ONE OF THE TURNING POINTS IN HISTORY CAN BE CONTRIBUTED TO THE FACT THAT THE AFGANS FOUGHT AND DEFEATED THE INVASION OF THE WELL ARMED RUSSIAN ARMY, WHO WAS TRYING TO CONQUOR THEM TO GAIN A WARM WATER PORT. THIS INSPIRED THE PEOPLE OF EUROPE WHO WERE LIVING UNDER COMMUNISM. IF THE AFGANS WITH SIMPLE WEAPONS AND A STRONG SPIRIT CAN FIGHT FOR THEIR FREEDOM THAN THOSE IN EUROPE LIVING UNDER COMMUNISM COULD ALSO. HE FELT THAT THIS EVENTUALLLY LEAD TO THE FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL.

HIS FATHER ALLOWED HIM TO STAY IN ONE PLACE TO GET AN GOOD EDUCATION AND THE OTHER WAS HIS ACCESS TO LIBRARY BOOKS. HE IS ON THE BOARD OF THE PUBLIC LIBRARY. HE SHARED THAT IF THE BOND PASSES AUSTIN WILL HAVE A NEW STATE OF THE ARTS CENTRAL LIBRARY WITH 200 THOUSAND SQUARE FOOT. THE OLD LIBRARY WILL BE USED BY THE AUSTIN HISTORY CENTER AND OTHERS. THE LOCATION HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED.

Thanks for an absolutely great reception during our Club visits. While I still have four Clubs to visit, the state of Rotary in our District is mighty good. Your leadership has been truly inspiring as I have watched you transform your Clubs. I'll be talking with you individually and in Cluster meetings in the coming weeks to discuss the 2nd half of our year.

I intend now to begin working at our upcoming events, membership, and Foundation growth.
I ask you to appoint a Club Foundation Chair as a Board member or Lane Chair in your Club. Many of you already have one and the new organization of Clubs next year requires one. By establishing the position this year, it will enhance giving to the Foundation and help the Club get ready to apply for grants early next year. The Club Foundation Chair duties include:

Monthly:

A three- to five-minute presentation on an aspect of the Annual Programs Fund. An update on total Annual Programs Fund contributions in the Club; identification of new Rotary Foundation Sustaining Members, new Paul Harris Fellows, and new Multiple Paul Harris Fellows.
Contact between Annual Giving subcommittee chairs, club foundation chairs, and district leadership to communicate any, solicitation, or recognition activities.

Quarterly:
Assessing quarterly contributions with club dues or encouraging Rotarians in your club and district to make a gift to the Annual Programs Fund. Making club presentations to promote "EREY."

Annually:
Review the Annual Programs Fund (APF) goal for the year;
Discuss strategies to attain the APF goal;
***Develop a simple administrative plan to collect donations, credit them to members, maintain a tracking plan, and reward participation. ***
Grants;
Work with the Club International Chair to apply for Foundation grants.

ONE OF THE WAYS THE MONEY IS USED IS FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP. THE RECIPIENTS ARE AT LEAST AT THE END OF THEIR SOPHAMORE YEAR IN COLLEGE. IT IS A YEAR LONG PROCESS FROM APPLICATION TO ACCEPTANCE. GENE SAID THAT THE SCHOLARS ARE EXCEPTIONAL PEOPLE WHO ARE BRIGHT AND HAVE A SERVANT HEART. ONCE THEY ARE ASSIGNED TO AN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, THEY SERVE AS AMERICAN AMBASSADORS TO ROTARIES OF A FORGEIN COUNTRY. WHEN THEY RETURN TO THE UNITED STATES, THEY SERVE AS AMBASSADORS FROM THE COUNTRY WHERE THEY WERE LIVING, SHARING THEIR EXPERIENCES AND KNOWLEDGE WITH CLUBS HERE. BECAUSE OF ITS SUCCESS MORE GRANTS WERE ISSUED AROUND THE WORLD. IN 1985 DR. CONSECO,GODFATHER OF POLIOPLUS, PUT FORTH THE IDEA THAT THROUGH ROTARIAN EFFORT POLIO COULD BE ERADICATED. Anne Elizabeth Wynn spoke to us about First Night Austin. This event occurs on New Year?s Eve. The tradition started in Boston 30 years ago and now many cities across the US have a First Night. Austin will be the first city in Texas to have one. It is an art festival that will bring together every social economic group in town. This non-alcoholic event is geared toward families. It starts at 2pm on Congress between 9th and 5th Street. At 5:30 there will be a grand procession to City Hall for more events. It is free to the public. One can buy First Night Buttons to support the event and to gain access to inside events. For information visit firstnightaustin.org.
Lawrence Taylor shared his Rotary Moment with us. He was raised on a family tobacco farm, worked 30 years internationally in the elevator business, moved to Austin to be close to family and is now employed by the Department of Labor and Licensing as Chief Elevator Inspector.
Beautify Austin Clean up is this Saturday at 9am, meet at San Jacinto and 11th, coffee to follow at Starbucks 10th and Congress. It will serve as a make-up.
Karen Rima?s niece, Anne Marie Bruner is a Rotary Ambassador Scholar in Cardiff Wales. Congratulations.
Allison Billodeau and Frank Beynon are recovering from health issues. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Tim Flynn, Nurse Practitioner, went to Waco to help with evacuees from the hurricanes. We are proud of his service to help others.
Representative Bob Hunter was the inspiration and founding member for our club. He is the one who worked with the district to make our club a reality. Bob who has served Abilene for 20 years has announced that he will not seeking re-election. He will be missed greatly. Our club wishes him many thanks for all he has done.

ACC Expanding to Cover All of Austin

John Hernandez, Vice Chair, of the Austin Community College Board of Trustees came to speak to the Capitol of Texas Rotary Club last Wednesday, May 4, 2005, about ACC’s proposition to expand its taxing district to all areas within the Austin city limits. As most of you already know, the voters overwhelming supported ACC in Saturday’s election by a majority of 79.4 percent.

By expanding its taxing district to include portions of the Round Rock, Eanes and Pflugerville school districts, ACC will begin receiving an additional $6.5 million in revenue and an estimated 1,300 additional students, who live in the newly annexed areas. Currently, the College has 29,000 students enrolled in for-credit courses and has an operating budget of $130 million. Hernandez pointed out on Wednesday that the anticipated revenue from these new areas will be used to expand some of ACC’s programs and help keep tuition costs inline.

Chiapas Hospital Equipment

The Capitol Club’s International Committee needs your help. The have set out to help the General Hospital of Tapachula City, in Chiapas, México, in supply them with medical and laboratory paraphernalia. They are asking members to seek out donations by August 2005, when they will be personally delivering the equipment.

In a letter to the club, the hospital’s director shared some basic information about the facility, the area they serve, and their needs. The letter is as follows:

The General Hospital Tapachula is an institution of public health. It is a hospital of medium complexity that has as its responsibility 21 municipalities in the State. Its area of responsibility is bounded by the border with the Republic of Guatemala, the Pacific Coast, the Sonocusco Zone and Mountain Region. The area has a population of 650,000 people. Most of the area can be considered to be rural. The people who reside in the area have little access to health services. Fundamentally this is a result of the characteristics of the land, the fact that the population is so dispersed and as a result of the extreme poverty in the area. We would be very happy if you would consider our request for medical equipment and instruments. I would also like to mention that the equipment we need the most is equipment that can be used in our cancer treatment facility. We are the only facility in the area dealing [with] the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. This is the type of equipment we need the most and it is the most difficult for us to acquire.”

Attached to the letter was a list of special needs:

1. A Multi-position Remote Control Bed (used to change positions of patients undergoing Brachytherapy, an advanced cancer treatment, where radioactive seeds or sources are placed in or near the tumor itself, giving a high radiation dose to the tumor while reducing the radiation exposure in the surrounding healthy tissues.)

2. System of monitors for vital signs (used to monitor patients undergoing Brachytherapy and the protection of nurses.)

3. An equipped ambulance (to transport patients)

4. A Server, along with Computers and Printers (to establish a computer network)

5. Colonoscopy equipment with a monitor (for the detection of cervical lesions and to make it easier to find them for biopsy.)

6. Fluoroscopic equipment (used in the verification of the position of radioactive sources in patients undergoing Brachytherapy.)

7. Movable Lead Screens (to protect patients and staff during Brachytherapy treatments.)

8. Radiation Detectors (Geiger-Mueller) (for monitoring areas where radiation treatments take place.)

9. Portable X-Ray Machine(s)

10. Tomography equipment (used to produce a three-dimensional image of the internal structures of the human body by the observation and recording of the differences in the effects on the passage of waves of energy impinging on those structures.)

11. Simulator for Teleterapia, using Cobalt-60 (used to plan and implement radiation treatments with accuracy.)

12. A Unit Cobalt 60 Theratron-Phoenix Model (used to give treatments of Teleterapia.)

13. Hematotest (used to carry out automated laboratory analysis.)

14. Laboratory equipment to investigate pathologies (microscopes, stainless steel tables, refrigerators, etc.

15. Wheel Chairs

16. Stretchers

17. Camera of Laminar Flow (used to eliminate contaminated air during Chemotherapy treatments.)

18. Chairs (suitable for patients undergoing Chemotherapy.)

19. Surgical instruments (all types)

20. Electron transmitter (suitable for the treatment of skin cancer)

21. Mammogram machine

22. Perfusion Pump (used to administer exact doses of Chemotherapy medications.)

23. Hospital Furniture
